Dear Parents / Caregivers

As the term comes to an end, we are very excited about the upcoming SciFest being held this week that celebrates the science and technology activities the students have been involved with over the term.  We have made specific changes to these activities to encourage the love of science and have students experience relevant investigations that make a difference.

Our Science & Technology Fair entries will be available for parents to view this  Thursday from 5.30pm. They are truly amazing and show the students inquisitive thinking about how the world works and ways to make it better.

 

Paid Union Meeting 

 

Currently the teachers union, NZEI are in negotiation with the government around the terms and conditions of their Collective Contract. The aim of this is to  free teachers to teach so every child receives the personal attention they need to learn and thrive. It means freeing principals to focus on leading and it means ensuring there are enough teachers by attracting more people to teaching, by respecting them as professionals and paying them properly.

Our students come to school to learn all the skills and abilities that they’ll need to grow up healthy, happy and productive in the 21st century. Our nation can afford to ensure every child receives the education they need to succeed in life, and for every educator to be trusted and resourced to make that a reality. It’s simply a matter of priorities.

As we head into negotiations for the Primary Teachers’ Collective Agreement this year, we’ll be standing together for our students and for an education system that values, attracts and retains the amazing teachers who are entrusted with the education of our children.

As a result there will be a stop-work meeting held this Thursday 28th June, meaning that school will close at 1pm. If your child does need supervision please inform the office so arrangements can be made.

 

2018 ERO Report

Recently, our latest ERO report was released to the community and we are very proud of the efforts made by our board of trustees, staff and students over the last three years. It has been a team effort focused on providing a high quality education for all students. Below are some of the highlights of our report:

What school processes and practices are effective in enabling achievement of equity and excellence? 

  • Students’ engagement is well promoted by the broad curriculum. School vision, history and local themes are clearly evident in practice. There are many opportunities for students to participate and celebrate success in academic, sporting, artistic, cultural and leadership activities.

  • An appropriate range of assessment tools are used to measure student achievement. This information is used to identify students whose progress needs acceleration. Teachers have a collective approach to meeting the needs of these students. They use data to inform decisions about strategies and actions to address individual learning needs. Transitions for children into and through the school are well considered and soundly managed.

  • There is a positive tone and learning culture throughout the school. Relationships are respectful and reciprocal. Students and staff appreciate the strong family atmosphere and shared values. Student wellbeing is supported by well-considered pastoral systems.

  • School leaders work in a cohesive, systematic way to effectively establish a culture of ongoing improvement. They recognise and use the knowledge and skills of teachers to lead aspects of the curriculum. Extensive professional development is focused on introducing new methodologies and growing teachers’ capability. Teachers use current research and evidence of best practice as they inquire into strategies and approaches for effective teaching.

How effectively does this school respond to those Māori and other students whose learning and achievement need acceleration?

  • The school is continuing to improve its effectiveness in accelerating the progress of those Māori and other students who are at risk of not achieving.

  • School data for 2017 shows that the majority of Māori and other students identified as being at risk have made accelerated progress with their learning.

Students with additional learning needs are well identified and a range of appropriate supports and programmes are in place. Most of these students are show

For sustained improvement and future learner success, the school can draw on existing strengths in:

  • a positive and respectful learning environment that supports students’ engagement and learning

  • a collaborative approach and high expectations from trustees, leaders and teachers that promote improved outcomes for students

  • Identifying, tracking, monitoring and responding to the needs of priority learners to improve their progress.

Next steps

For sustained improvement and future learner success, development priorities are in:

  • continuing the development of culturally responsive teaching practice to better support Māori students’ culture, language and identity, and further their success

  • strengthening the use of student achievement information and enhancing moderation practices to increase the consistency and reliability of teachers’ assessment judgements.

Dunedin School Visits

This term Senior Leaders visited Dunedin intermediate schools to view initiatives and programmes specifically related to this age group. It was a wonderful experience seeing how individual schools developed programmes to meet the needs of their students. Undoubtedly, the greatest thing to notice about all schools was the focus on providing students of this age with a large number of experiences and opportunities for students to participate in.

At PNINS we are really proud of the diverse learning experiences that form part of our programmes under our FOUR major learning areas - ACADEMIA, SPORT, PERFORMING ARTS & CITIZENSHIP. The depth and breadth of what we offer is staggering and shows the  commitment from our staff and community members. PNINS students get a great deal and we are constantly looking to further expand and improve on what we do well.

Staffing

We are happy to announce that Mrs Walker will be expecting her first child in Term 4 and the staff  are thrilled for her and her husband Matt. This does mean that Room 7 will have a new teacher sometime in Term 4 and we will inform parents of when this will occur. It is expected that the new teacher will start around weeks 3 - 5.

We wish Sarah and Matt all the best as they head into this exciting time.

Communication with the school

A close relationship between home and school is critical  if students are to be successful. At intermediate age we find that some parents tend to not be so involved as they were at their child’s primary school. However, we also urge parents to get actively  involved in your child's intermediate education.

At times we understand that parents will have concerns and issues to deal with. The process for this is outlined below in our COMPLAINTS POLICY which can be accessed on our school website  - https://pnins.school.nz/school-docs

The purpose of our complaints policy is to provide clear guidelines for the school community in raising and resolving concerns and complaints.

We have procedures in place that we follow to ensure that complaints are handled appropriately. Our procedures enable us to:

  • maintain the best learning environment for our students

  • resolve matters of concern early, if possible

  • respond to feedback and concerns constructively

  • deal with complaints fairly, effectively, and promptly

  • take into account individual circumstances

  • maintain confidentiality

  • preserve school/community relationships and communication

  • monitor and record complaints and concerns about student safety.

Most complaints can be resolved informally by discussions with the people concerned. We encourage parents to make contact first with their class teacher if they have concerns. Please be mindful of times available for teachers as they may not be able to respond immediately during the working day. However, we do aim to respond as soon as possible.

Pubertal Change Unit

From Week 1 of Term 3, as a part of our Health Programme, all students will be involved in a unit about understanding the changes during Puberty.  This unit aligns with the NZ Curriculum and has been approved by the Board of Trustees to teach within our school.

The big idea for this unit is: Being resilient through change.  The purpose of this unit is to help students understand the physical, emotional and social changes which take place during puberty and reassure them that everyone experiences these changes, but at different times. The unit also includes communication skills, cyber safety, Hauora and body image.  

The Life Education mobile classroom will be onsite from weeks 1 –4. Each class will visit the mobile classroom on 3 occasions.  These visits will support the in class teaching and learning around pubertal change and resilience.  The cost per child for the Life Education Trust is $4.00 please make your payment through the class room notebook.

If you wish your son or daughter to be withdrawn from class while this unit is being taught, please inform the principal in writing and your child will be given an alternative programme in another room.

Mid Year Uniform Check

Our a mid year uniform check has been going well and we are extremely happy with the response from our students. Some students would have received a letter to remind them about our school's expectations and we will be following up with this before the end of the term. Once again we thank parents for their support in keeping our expectations high.

Secondary School Roadshow Visits

Each year the local secondary schools visit with year 8 students, regarding possible options for 2019 as year 9 students. These are a great way to help students make a well informed decision of which secondary school they may wish to attend. Recently, PN Boys High School came and spoke to students and staff bringing with them some past PNINS  students to answer questions from our Year 8 boys.

We encourage all year 8 students to attend at least three presentations to ensure they are aware of the options that are available in the Manawatu

Whanau Hui

This Thursday from 5.30 - 7.30pm we will be holding a whanau hui for all parents and family members who are interested in Maori education at PNINS. There will be a performance from our Kapahaka group showcasing their recent bracket that they performed at Te Pae Tamariki in the Regent Theatre. Nau mae haere mai!

School Council

The school councillors have had a busy term working on a few different projects.  They have attended Young Leaders’ Day, 40 Hour Famine Leaders’ Day, Kind Hearts Regional Morning and they have also begun a Kind Hearts initiative throughout the school.  Currently they are planning the school disco.

40 hour Famine:  The school councillors want to say a big thank you to the students who took part in the recent 40 Hour Famine.  The aim was to support the children of South Sudan who have been affected by conflict, drought and famine. All fundraising booklets and sponsorship money are due back into school now.  Today’s mufti day was the last part of the fundraising for this cause.

School Disco:  This will be held next Wednesday 4 July 7-9pm in Te Tihi.  Parents please make sure you come into Te Tihi to collect your children at 9pm.

 

2019 Camp Payments

Our current Year 7 students will be attending camp at Curious Cove located in the Marlborough Sounds in Terms 1 and 2 of next year.  The cost of this camp is estimated to be around $460 per student and we understand that this comes at a time of year when costs are high for parents and whanau.  PNINS are happy to receive weekly, fortnightly, monthly or any early contributions to student camp fees at any time between now and students departing for camp.  We hope that this makes things easier for our families by being able to spread the camp cost payment over a longer timeframe.  You can make payments directly into the school bank account:

Please put your child’s First Initial, Surname, Room Number and the reference camp so we can allocate these payments accordingly.  You are also welcome to pay by EFTPOS at the school office. Sorry we are unable to accept credit cards through our machine.

If you started paying now weekly payments of $10 would have camp paid for before students leave in term 1/early term 2 next year.
