At PNINS we are clear about ‘THE NORMAL WAY’ which guides us on how we treat people, our environment, and ourselves. These expectations are based around RESPECT and are explicitly taught and reinforced through our learning and reward programmes. The underlying belief is that we respect the rights of everyone to learn in a safe, supportive and attractive environment and THINK before we ACT.

Online Behaviour Expectations
At PNINS we have similar expectations around behaviour when online, with a substantial learning programme that occurs at the beginning of the year to help build digital citizenship. Each student is to gain a ‘trusted pass’ before being able to access the internet to support their learning. We have developed a number of learning activities designed to cover these topics and others as they arise:
Use of social media sites as they are public places
What you say about people and what will people think of you online
Online security of passwords and locking down valuable information
Who are you really talking to.

Online Communication with Parents
This year we are focusing strongly on communicating with parents and the community through a variety of online platforms. We have three main ways to do this through our new website, school facebook page and school app. We believe that each has a different function and purpose
Essentially, a school app allows us to send out blanket communications to parents, saving a lot of time and money whilst keeping everyone better informed. We will primarily use this to share important information. Benefits include:
Up to date information on timetable changes, reminders of upcoming events, school newsletters and parents don’t have to go searching for bits of paper or trying to find them on the school website, they can simply click on the app and get connected.
It’s quick and simple to download and generally easy to use. Not only that, it’s free.
The great thing about the school app is that it can send parents push notifications. So if there’s a problem or mum and dad need a reminder about something it will come up on the smartphone or tablet screen as an alert.
Money isn’t being wasted on sending out letters and flyers and administrative time isn’t spent on trying to contact individuals to update them about any little change in the timetable.
It allows parents to plan their lives more effectively because they can check what is going on when they have to organise their own day.
Parents can even interact with the app and take part in surveys and satisfaction questionnaires which helps improve the running of our school.
We will primarily use our facebook page to share and celebrate the learning and achievements of our students. At times we will provide some reminders however, we are very aware that the due to the large number of posting and comments parents can miss these reminders. Therefore we will use the school app re upcoming events. We will:
Post a large number of posts with photos every week in order to keep families up to date with what is happening at PNINS
Monitor posts and comments closely to ensure that they are appropriate and safe for students and our community
Ensure that students whose parents haven’t given them permission to be online,
Our new website enables us to provide a wealth of information for parents and potential parents who are thinking of sending their children to our school.
The way that children learn has evolved overtime
As parents we want our children to learn and do well at school. Over the years things have changed from what you remember when you were at school.
Learning today doesn’t mean sitting at desks all the time, working through textbooks, or copying from the blackboard. Children are more likely to be involved in ‘doing’ things, which is why just looking through their school books may not tell you much about all the teaching and learning that has taken place. Learning activities, such as co-operative work, problem-solving tasks, asking and answering questions, and working with new ideas, are all commonly used in classrooms. Learning also happens outside the classroom on sports/cultural trips, at camps, museums and at home.
What ever happened to tests?
Tests are one way of finding out how well children are making progress, but teachers are likely to use other methods for this as well, particularly at primary and intermediate school. Throughout the year, a teacher might use a combination of:
These types of learning activities are now used by teachers in primary and intermediate classrooms to look at how well a child understands the knowledge and uses the skills that have been taught.
How can you as parents help your children learn?
spend time with them
talk with them about important things
encourage them to do their best
find out what they are good at and what interests them
be excited about the things they are good at
read with them often, talk with them about the book
discuss a news item with them to get their perspective
give them appropriate responsibilities at home
get them to find out things for you
ask them their opinions about things
have high and realistic expectations of them
be enthusiastic about learning with them
expect them to go to school every day
really believe that they can do well
Whilst the way children learn has evolved over time and the learning activities they engage in are varied and more hands on, the essence of education remains focused on student achievement and social and emotional well- being.
As a school and as parents, we work in partnership to ensure your child gets maximum benefit out of their intermediate school years.
Mike King - I am Hope Tour
Mike King and his team visited our school in Palmerston North on their I am Hope tour.
Mike’s presentation was one of the most powerful ones that PNINS has been privileged to see for a very long time.
He is a skilled presenter who held the attention of over 700 Year 7 and 8 students, and 60 adults for over an hour. His presentation has had a huge impact on our young people – there is a buzz around the school, and both written and verbal feedback from adults and students has shown the extent and impact of his messages.
“Mike King empowers people with his story and makes us feel like we’re not the only ones who are like this and in this type of situation.”
He focussed on confidence and self-esteem, and how we all struggle at times with self-doubt and negative thoughts. At no time did he mention suicide or behaviours leading to this, but rather he gave our young people strategies to manage themselves when they might be feeling low as well as ways to support others around them who may be in a similar situation.
His ability to make kids laugh but also to be honest and put their hands up to acknowledge their own situations, in front of a large audience, is impressive and Mike has the ability to connect with people of all ages, through his honesty, openness and sharing of his life story. His visit will have a continuing and positive impact on the lives of many of our students at PNINS.

Winter Sports Sign ups are live on our website. Thank you to those parents that have signed their child up for a sport already.
This is the last week you can join a Winter Sport.
We will be closing sign ups on Wednesday 4 April.
Netball trials have already began and all other sports will have trials on Trials day 5 and 6 April.
PNINS Triathlon Team
The PNINS Triathlon Team has been busy over the last two weeks competing in Inter-School Triathlon, Super Sport Triathlon and National Schools Triathlon held in Nelson.
PNINS at Weetbix
On Tuesday 20 March PNINS took part in the Weekbit Kids Triathlon. We had over 80 students representing PNINS.
It was great to see so many parents getting involved also.
Well done to everyone that took on the challenge, we hope to build on this for next years event.
PNINS at Great Forest Events
This year PNINS is having a school tent at the Great Forest Events.
This running event brings in 3000+ people from all over to run in the Waitarere Forest.
The team that delivers the event are getting behind schools and have made it free for primary and intermediate age kids to take part in the 5K and 10K events.

Auditions for our Friday Performing Arts groups have now finished. We have had more students audition this year than ever before and because of this, this year all of our Performing Arts groups will be bigger in size than previous years. However, as is always the case, we simply cannot accommodate all of the students that audition and unfortunately some students will still miss out on being selected. All groups will be announced by the end of next week and students are asked to check the lists on the music room window next week.
This term heralded a new chapter in how some of our technological practice will be implemented. The introduction of a new laser cutter means that a much broader range design and project outcomes will be possible for students. Materials commonly used in our materials technology subjects such as wood, plastic, fabrics, leather and card can be cut or engraved into with professional looking results. However, this also entails that we can be much more creative by linking this tool with digital technology to develop and transform ideas into material technological outcomes. Both specialist teachers and students are currently in the process of learning how best to use this technology but students have made a great start by cutting out and personalising projects such as key tags, mood lights, pencil cases and chopping boards. We are looking forward to exploring the many possibilities that will unfold as we continue to learn!
Car Restoration Project
In term 2, a group of students are undergoing a beginners car restoration project with Mr Grady.
The car is a 1958 Morris Minor 4 door sedan. They plan to sell the car after it is complete and donate any profit to a suitable charity. They are learning about basic mechanics, electrics and brakes and upgrading the trim, with a boot rack and wicker picnic basket.
They have a garage behind Arataki team (Room 2) and will be learning about workshop safety as part of the programme.
There will be open days advertised next term.
