Dear Parents / Caregivers
Recently, we have had a number of issues that are related to social media. Most social media platforms have an age restriction of 13 and I urge parents to think carefully about signing their child up on a social media platform if they are younger than the minimum age as they may not have developed the skills needed to deal with all that could go wrong on social media. The issues that we are dealing with originate outside of school hours and then make their way into the school gate.
What is online bulling
Online bullying (also known as cyberbullying) is when a person uses digital technology to send, post or publish content with the intention to harm another person or a group. This behaviour is often aggressive, is repeated and involves some kind of power imbalance between the people involved.
Online bullying can take many forms:
name calling online
repeated unwanted online messages
spreading rumours or lies
fake accounts used to harass people
excluding people from social activities
embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles
What to do if you’re bullied
Don’t reply: Especially to messages from phone numbers, profiles or people you don’t know.
Don’t attack the person back: Avoid giving the bully the satisfaction of a reaction.
Have a conversation: If it’s safe, try talking to the person privately about what they’ve said or done.
Save messages and images: Take screen shots of the bullying in case you need evidence later. Find out how here.
Cut off the person bullying you: Block their phone number, or block them on social media.
Report it: If the online bullying is happening on social media, you can find out how to report it below.
There is a NZ law to help: The Harmful Digital Communications Act which aims to help people dealing with online bullying, abuse and harassment.
Get help: Contact Netsafe for help. We can help with any of the above, tell you if there’s anything you can do to stop the abuse and let you know how to stay safe.

TE WIKI O TE REO MAORI
Last week was ‘te wiki o te reo Maori’ and our students and staff participated in many activities that promoted the use of te reo in everyday life. There are many photos and information about these on our school facebook page. The theme was ‘'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ following on from the success of last year’s theme ‘Kia Ora te Reo Māori’. ‘Kia Kaha’ is well known in New Zealand English with its correct Māori meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about language health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.
We have been inundated with so many enrolments for next year and are excited to know that so many students would like to come and be part of the PNINS team. Unfortunately, we are unable to take all enrolments and therefore held a ballot under the supervision of the “justice of the peace”. All in-zone students are automatically offered a place and all other enrolments are put into a ballot and drawn by a JP in the following order:
Priority 1 – Applicants with special programmes ie ORRS
Priority 2 – Sibling of a current student of the school
Priority 3 - Sibling of a former student of the school
Priority 4 – Child of a former student of the school
Priority 5 – Child of an employee of the board of the school, or the child of member of the school board
Priority 6 – All other applicants.
Those not successful who exceed the total number are put on a waiting list in the order that their ballot number is drawn.
Out of zone enrolments are not accepted after the ballot. But these can be held in case the school decides to hold another ballot before the end of the year.
Any in zone enrolments can be accepted after ballot date.
All students will receive a letter or email today informing them if their child has been accepted or not. Once confirmation has been received new students and families are invited to attend our Orientation evening next week.

An invitation is extended to all parents of Year 6 children to attend our Orientation Evening to be held in Te Tihi – the Performing Arts Centre on Thursday 27 September at 7pm.

Term 3 has been a busy but productive one for students and staff at Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School.It has been pleasing to see a large number of students across year groups, learning and achieving to a high level in academic, performing arts, sport and citizenship areas.
Highlights have been:

We are proud of our students for their willingness to attempt new challenges and for the way they have represented our school this term.
I would like to thank parents and caregivers for your support and participation in our many school events.
Special thanks to all staff for the preparation and organisation put into their teaching and learning programmes, and involvement in the many extra-curricular sports and cultural programmes at Palmerston North Intermediate Normal School, enabling us to be at the forefront of pre-adolescent education.
As the Winter Sports season draws to a close it is timely to reflect back and acknowledge the many fine young people who represent our school in sport each week.
Throughout the season we have enjoyed watching our teams in action whether it be Netball, Basketball, Hockey, Super Sports events and NZAIMS.
A number of things have impressed:

Positive parent support on the sideline
Congratulations to our many sports teams on how well they have represented our school, and to those students who have been selected for representative teams this year.
Thanks to our Parents, Teachers, Massey Teachers and High School student coaches who have given so generously of their time, to teach and practise the skills with players, and provide support and encouragement each Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school or on Saturday mornings.
Special thanks to our Sports Co-ordinator, Mr Chris Sanson and Sports Administrator, Mrs Belinda Ruebe whose organisation and co-ordination throughout the year makes our sports programme run smoothly and gives opportunities for maximum numbers of students to participate.
PNINS Ski Trip
On Sunday 16th September PNINS held it's first Ski Trip at the Tukino Ski Field. We had 24 students attend this trip with a range of experience; from students who had never skied before to very experienced skiers.
We spent two amazing days skiing the slopes of Mt. Ruapehu with the students having a wonderful time. The weather was a little inclement on the Monday but students showed fantastic resilience and skied all day. On Tuesday the sun broke through and we had another full day of skiing.
As teachers, we were amazed by the progress the students demonstrated with their skiing skills and also how they used the challenging tow rope.
As we returned on Tuesday night, students were abuzz with excitement from an amazing trip away.
A special thanks goes to our amazing parent helpers; Von, Sonia, Amanda and Helen who were integral in making this trip the success that it was.
Year 7's are now able to pre-purchase the 2018 yearbook. Students will need to go to the library before school and order these from Mrs Knowles. They are $10 each. Year 8’s will all receive one on behalf of the school. All students will receive their yearbook once they have been printed in Term 4. We also have copies of our 2017 yearbook selling for $5 for any students who did not purchase one last year.
Annual Taradale/PNINS Performing Arts Groups Exchange 2018
This year the annual Taradale/PNINS Performing Arts Cultural Exchange will take place in week three of term four.
Thursday and Friday
25/26 October 2018
This year it is Taradale Intermediate’s turn to visit us.
So that we can begin to place students from Taradale we need to know the number of PNINS Performing Arts students that are able to billet students from there.
All you need to do to billet a child is provide a bed (doesn’t necessarily need to be an actual bed – it can be an airbed or camp stretcher in your child’s room) a meal on Thursday evening and a packed lunch on Friday.
