Performing Arts

In the Performing Arts area, your child will engage in many activities and be given many opportunities, the aim being for your child to sample activities widely with an eye to involvement in Arts Programmes in the future.

Our school-wide Team Performing Arts Programme runs for a set period during the year. This programme allows all students to be involved in Dance and Drama Programmes during their two years at Intermediate Normal. Students may also audition for a place in an extension Performing Arts group. These groups are timetabled to meet and receive tuition at a set time on Friday mornings.

The Musical Soirée involves a large number of students from PNINS and invited schools performing in a range of performing arts activities. These performances also enable all other students to view and appreciate the talent and creative ability of others. School Productions feature each alternate year.

Most Friday afternoons beginning at 2.30pm, a sharing assembly takes place to which parents and friends of the school are invited to attend. This assembly may have an academic, sports or performing arts focus. The calendar of Assemblies features students from each of the six Teaching Teams performing in a Team Assembly at some stage during the year, Blue Badge Award Assemblies, and Nga Tohunga Award Assemblies. We also invite along special guests to perform or make presentations. Our own Performing Arts Groups also perform at some assemblies. Details regarding upcoming assemblies are featured in our fortnightly newsletters together with confirmation of the starting time.

Throughout your child’s two years, students are involved in Poetry, Speech and Hui a Te Reo Festivals. All students participate at a class level, with the best from each class performing at a Team Assembly, and the very best from each Team performing at our School Festival Assembly.

The School Specialist Performing Arts Group Programme runs for most of the year. The Specialist Performing Arts Groups are:

Orchestra Choir Dance Drama Kapa Haka

Members of these Arts Groups come together to practice each Friday. The number in each group is limited so auditions are held to select members of Arts Groups.

Our Specialist Arts Groups have three main performances:

  • Arts Performance Evening for Parents
  • Contributing Schools Concert
  • Arts Exchange with Taradale Intermediate School in Hawke’s Bay

Orchestra, Choir and Kapa Haka also perform at our Final Assembly/Prizegiving.
The Kapa Haka Group, under the direction of skilled Māori Tutors, participates in our Hui a Te Reo Festival, at our school assemblies, and on other formal school occasions.
